You may be looking to create websites for commercial use, or may even have volunteered to create a web presence for a local club – regardless, you need to understand how the web hosting resources fit together and how to deploy them in a way which gives the required result.

The best way to learn is by actually doing it. I am setting us a challenge to – setup a web server and install the free version of CWP and then create a website powered by WordPress. To do this, all you need is a computer with a bit of drive space and a broadband connection.

First setup a Virtual Machine using one of the free resources below:

  • VMWare Fusion – if you are running MacOS. A Macbook or Mac-Mini will be fine. Download VMWare Fusion Player for personal use.
  • Hyper-V – is you are running a Professional version of windows.  Enable in control panel.
  • Virtualbox – if you are running anything else. Download from the virtualbox.org.

Setup the virtual machine with a couple of CPUs and 2GB Ram and as much drive space as you can. 100GB is ideal. Setup the virtual network adapter to connect to the network appearing with its own IP address, rather than sharing the IP address with the host machine. Setup a virtual CD/DVD drive.

Next – download the CentOS 8 DVD ISO image from the centos.org website and set the boot order on the virtual machine to boot from the CD/DVD drive first.
